Ran Slavin’s work is cross media project based, often site specific and includes cinema, video installation, sound composition, photography & print editions.?With works featuring dream influenced arrangements that bestow uncanny fusion’s of digital and real, narratives of disorientation, science fiction and Neo-Noir. The city scape phenomenon as location, horizon, subject and narrative has been a recurring theme in concurring recent works. One of the essential figures in the Israeli video art and sound scene since the early 90’s, Ran Slavin belongs to the generation which renewed the use of video with post production sensibilities. In his video installations films and soundtracks, characters and worlds of unresolved mysteries unfold, reconstructed dreams that entangle in fiction lead through a crime investigation in Tokyo (Call for Dreams feature film 2018), dislocation, mythology, geo-political war and fiction sprawl and intertwine in a southern Israeli desert (Variations Amud Anan video installation), digital meditation and synthetic multiscreen environments immerse the viewer (World5 multi channel video) a gun shot wounded man wakes in an underground parking lot trying to reconstruct his memory while a tied woman in a hotel room in Shanghai is plotting with a stranger on a phone (The Insomniac City Cycles film) a medieval science fiction psychological fantasy is revealed by a small boy under Jerusalem (Ursulimum video) sound-synched barking people and barking dogs (Everything Is Urgent video).?? ?“Ran Slavin’s images reference crime and fantasy movies but they also exhibit a visionary quality which calls Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or David Lynch’s Inland Empire to mind. The Insomniac City Cycles can be understood as an unreal thriller; a journey through altered levels of consciousness, which allow to transcend everyday life, to access spheres of the subconscious, even though our body and mind guard it as something inalienable, and even though it constitutes unconscious memory. Past and present, the awareness of time and death, worlds which break up into pieces, overlap, and weave into a kaleidoscopic, unreal journey, inwards, inside the many rooms, which exist inside of us; underneath all of this, there lies the difficulty of daily life and the instability, which nests behind conventions and stereotypes.
